What are the benefits of drinking soursop tea?

Soursop, a large fruit weighing five pounds or more, is native to tropical America. High in vitamins B and C, soursop has an acidic flavor, and its juice is used in cold drinks and frozen fruit recipes. Tea made from soursop has been shown to provide health benefits, particularly related to the prevention and treatment of some forms of cancer. Soursop tea may help prevent some forms of cancer, according to a study published in the January 2011 issue of the journal "Pharmacognosy." In the study, soursop roots were tested against tissue cultures of human lung cancer, leukemia, cervical cancer and breast cancer. Results showed effectiveness against all forms of cancer tested. Researchers attributed the anti-cancer effects of soursop to high concentrations of alkaloid compounds and acetogenins -- a family of compounds with antibiotic, antifungal and antiparasitic effects. The results of this study show promise for the use of soursop as a cancer preventive.

Soursop was included in a list of plants with significant anti-cancer properties in a Brazilian study published in the November 2010 issue of the journal "Molecules." The study evaluated anti-cancer potential, antioxidant ability and content of tannins -- bitter compounds with some medicinal value -- of 14 Brazilian medicinal plants. Soursop was not found to be high in antioxidants or tannins, but it showed effectiveness against throat cancer and lung cancer. Other plants with anti-cancer potential included Lantana camara, Handroanthus impetiginosus and Mentzelia aspera.

Method of Activity

A study published in the August 2009 issue of the journal "Phytotherapy Research" found that acetogenin compounds in soursop prevent cancer by inhibiting energy production in cancer cells. In the laboratory animal study, soursop acetogenin extract showed anticancer properties similar to the cancer chemotherapy drug doxorubicin. One extract tested in the study was effective against a strain of human cervical cancer cells. Colon Cancer

Colon cancer may respond well to treatment with soursop bush tea, according to researchers at Laboratorio de Química Orgánica, Escuela Nacional de Ciencias Biológicas, Instituto Politécnico Nacional, México. The tissue culture and laboratory animal study determined that soursop acetogenin extract exerted toxic effects on human colon cancer cells. Researchers at the Graduate Institute of Natural Products, Kaohsiung Medical University, Taiwan, reported the discovery of two new acetogenin compounds from soursop in a study published in the November 2004 issue of the "Journal of Natural Products." According to the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, MSKCC, graviola extract proved to be effective against liver cancer and breast cancers cells. Naturopath Leslie Taylor, author of "The Healing Power of Rainforest Herbs," notes that studies show graviola has an inhibitory effect on enzyme processes in some cancer cell membranes. Interestingly, graviola only affected cancer cells membranes and not those of healthy cells. This research may lend support to the herb's traditional use against cancer.

Researchers think that phytochemicals called Annonaceous acetogenins, present in the leaves and bark, are the tree's bioactive constitutents, according to Barrie Cassileth's article in the September 2008 issue of "Oncology." In the laboratory, graviola extracts were successful against leishmaniasis, a parasitic disease caused by the protozoa leishmania. The extract also effectively combated the herpes simplex virus, which can cause genital herpes and fever blisters. Graviola influences the body's serotonin neuroreceptors and may work as an anti-depressant, writes Cassileth.


In test-tube research, the roots and seeds of the graviola tree have demonstrated an initial toxicity to some neurons. MSKCC notes that graviola's possible neurotoxic action may lead to symptoms of a condition similar to Parkinson's disease. According to Taylor, the plant can lower blood pressure and can cause vomiting and nausea when too much is ingested.

I think most of you would have come across the viral email about "cancer cure : soursop". It was about soursop, the cancer killer and how this vital information was suppressed from public knowledge. It was from this particular email that took my curiosity to find out more about this fruit, the soursop. For those who still have not read the email, you can click on the link at the end of this article. Soursop has certain properties that kill cancer cells 10,000 times more efficient than chemotherapy; and they only kill cancer cells leaving the healthy cells unharmed. This means the patient does not suffer from the side effects that chemotherapy has. One of its cancer cure properties is annonacin. Soursop is high in carbohydrates, especially fructose. It also has large amount of vitamins C, B1, and B2.

Soursop is called by various names in different languages. Graviola in Portuguese, durian belanda in Malay, babana in Indonesian, guanabana in Spanish, gayubano in Philippines, and pawpaw (not to confuse with papaya) in Brazilian. Making tea from the leaves and bark. You can either use fresh leaves or dried ones. As the leaves are very potent, you only need one or two leaves for one person. You only need to steep the leaves in boiling water, just like making ordinary tea. The strength of the tea depends on the number of leaves and the length of time the leaves are left in the water. Other benefits are alleviating migraine headache, diarrhea, cough, back pain, stress, high blood pressure, and nerve ailment. If you are suffering from insomnia, try drinking this tea before going to sleep. As for children who like to bed wet, this tea will help prevent it. All said, the sour sop fruit, seeds, bark, roots and leaves have been found to even cure cancer.

To soothe inflammation and swelling, place crushed soursop leaves on the affected area. There are many other ailments that soursop is supposed to be effective, but I think a general awareness of the power of soursop is good enough for us to eat more of the fruit as well as drink the tea. Are all these true?

In the final analysis, are we going to believe all that have been written? Personally, I strongly believe that each fruit has its unique health and medicinal properties. Also in each of us, we have unique constituents making our bodies tick. Certain fruits may prove to be more effective for certain people, while for others not. Be that as it may, soursop is one fruit that you may not want to miss out.

This is an update. I have planted a soursop plant in my garden. It's been about 6 months already; and now it has grown to nearly 150 cm (5 feet). At the rate that it is growing, I think I may have to wait for at least another 2 years to see the first flowers. Take a look at the photo on the right. A word of caution

Research has suggested that there may be a connection between consumption of soursop and atypical forms of Parkinson's disease because of the high content of annonacin present in soursop. What an irony, as annonacin is supposed to cure cancer! Well, looks like you can't win them all. My own decision is that I would do things in moderation.

In the jungle, the quiet jungle…

For many years – long before HSI was founded – mainstream media reports often contemplated the bounty of healing botanicals that might lie hidden in the depths of the world’s rainforests. Inevitably, each report wondered if cancer treatments might be right under our noses – or at least under the noses of scientists who ventured into the Amazon and other rainforests.

Today, however, the media is more likely to report on the clearing of rainforests to make way for soy plantations, while herbal supplements are usually portrayed as highly suspect.

Under wraps

The consumption of tea and herbal infusions has increased rapidly in recent years. More and more people consume these infusions as daily beverages as well as for health purposes. The aim of this study was to supply new information on the antiproliferative function of these infusions for nutritionists and the general public. The in vitro antiproliferative activities of 60 different tea and herbal infusions on four cancer cell lines were evaluated by MTT assay. The results showed that some infusions strongly inhibited the proliferation of A549 (human lung cancer cells), MCF-7 (human breast cancer cells), HepG2 (human hepatoma cells) and HT-29 (human colon cancer cells), and decreased the viability of these cancer cell lines in a dose-dependent manner. In addition, some bioactive components in the infusions were also separated and determined by HPLC. The results suggested that some tea and herbal infusions may be potential dietary supplements for the prevention and treatment of cancer.

The overall number of new people who will develop cancer in a given year is expected to nearly double over the next two decades, claims a new report put out by the World Health Organization (WHO). Analysts at the international governing body say the current global rate of about 14 million new cancer cases annually, per 2012 data, will eventually balloon to somewhere in the ballpark of 25 million new cancer cases annually by 2035.

The sobering report comes on the heels of an earlier one out of France that similarly calculated a 75 percent increase in cancer diagnoses by 2030. With the exception of a few minor variances, both reports speculate that, based on current trends, new cases of cancer will skyrocket in the coming years. And the hardest hit will be poor and developing countries, many of which are right now undergoing major changes as a result of Western influence.

As far as the latest WHO report, this expected increase in new cancer cases has already been dubbed an imminent "human disaster," according to the U.K.'s Guardian. Unless the governments and medical systems of the world make a rapid switch to focusing on prevention rather than treatment, WHO says, the devastation that is soon to come, both in terms of unsustainable medical costs and widespread societal loss, will be unprecedented.

"The global cancer burden is increasing and quite markedly, due predominantly to the aging of the populations and population growth," alleges Chris Wild, director of WHO's International Agency for Research on Cancer, as quoted by BBC News. "If we look at the cost of treatment of cancers, it is spiraling out of control, even for the high-income countries. Prevention is absolutely critical and it's been somewhat neglected."

GMOs, fluoride and processed food linked to rising cancer rates While correct in his assessment that prevention needs to play a more prominent role in how society deals with cancer, Wild grossly misjudges why an increasing number of people across the globe are developing the disease in the first place. While age is definitely a factor in determining cancer risk, so are things like genetically modified organisms (GMOs), trans fats, fluoridated drinking water and many other ubiquitous facets of modern life in North America that are largely ignored.

While WHO gives a nod to the damage that can be caused by abusing alcohol and cigarettes, as well as the risks associated with being obese, the organization stops short of warning people about the cancer risks of consuming sodium nitrite, for instance, which is found in virtually all the deli meat sold at your neighborhood grocer.

WHO has also repeatedly failed to warn women about the dangers associated with submitting their bodies to regular mammograms, which multiple studies, including one recently published in the New England Journal of Medicine, have found can lead to breast cancer overdiagnosis. The ionizing radiation released during a mammogram has also been linked to causing breast cancer as well.

"Our food is sprayed about 30 times, with a cocktail of poisons, before we eat it," writes a commenter on The Guardian, pointing out WHO's apparent lack of concern about the many obvious carcinogens that we are all increasingly exposed to on a regular basis.

"[O]ur bathrooms are full of unregulated chemicals, which might well be carcinogenic ; our diet is not, in most cases, conducive to maintaining optimum health ; we do less and less exercise, and become sluggardly and overweight ; it is little wonder that people are becoming terminally ill to an increasing extent."

Top 5 cancer causing foods to avoid

Who isn’t afraid of the word “cancer”? we all know a family member or a friend who had it. And indeed, according to the American Cancer Society, more than one million people in the United States get cancer each year. The American Cancer Society lists many possible causes to cancer disease, including genetic factors, lifestyle factors such as tobacco use, diet, and physical activity, certain types of infections and environmental exposures to different types of chemicals and radiation. Since I’m very interested in healthy nutrition, I’ve written in the past about the top 14 foods that protect against cancer development, but it won’t help if we eat those foods while consuming large amounts of other foods that can increase the risk of cancer. So lets have a look at these cancer promoting foods so we all know not only what to eat, but what NOT to eat (or at least reduce their intake).

  1. High intake of processed foods

Many different substances are added to commercially prepared foods, such as artificial colors, chemical flavors, salt, sugar or artificial sweeteners. These additives are constantly investigated by researchers to check if any of them is thought to be a real risk. Sometimes there is a scare about a particular additive and some additives are thought to be a cancer risk. Heavily salted, smoked and pickled foods, for example, may increase the risk of stomach cancer. This may explain why there is such a high rate of stomach cancer in Japan, where salty, pickled foods are popular. Also an epidemiological study published in June 2010 in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that a diet high in salt can increase in 10% the risk of stomach cancer. Also artificial food coloring present many health risks. The research on artificial food coloring and cancer is limited to animal studies, including mice and rats, but some claim that these dyes are toxic – possibly toxic enough to cause cancer also to humans.

  1. High intakes of red meat, processed meat or charred food

It has been found that bowel and stomach cancer are more common in people who eat lots of red and processed meat. Red meat includes all fresh, minced and frozen beef, pork, lamb or veal. Also processed meats posses a risk for cancer. These have been preserved in some way other than freezing and include bacon, ham, salami, sausages, corned beef, black pudding, pâté and tinned meat. When you eat processed meats, you’re almost assuredly consuming sodium nitrite or sodium nitrate, which are added to processed and cured meats to preserve color and extend shelf life. Unfortunately, these compounds can be converted to nitrosamines, which are also known to cause cancer in laboratory rats (though again, the link in people is unclear). Also hot dogs, bacon and the like may also be preserved by methods involving smoke or salt, which also increases the exposure to potentially carcinogenic chemicals.

Also charred food creates chemicals that can damage our cells, making them more likely to become cancerous. Therefore the way you cook your meat can potentially make a big difference in the cancer risk it poses to you. Well-done and char-grilled meats that are slightly burnt on the outside are among the worst foods that increase the risk for cancer.

  1. Sugar

The role of sugar in the formation, growth and metastasis of cancer cells is a topic that has often divided the scientific community. There are sources that promote the idea that sugar “feeds” cancer. They suggest that eating foods with sugar makes cancer grow faster. The opponents claim that as a result, some cancer patients avoid eating any sugar, and eliminating beneficial foods, such as fruits, that contain essential nutrients. The opponents claim that there is no conclusive research on human subjects to prove that sugar makes cancerous cells grow. Avoiding foods with processed sugar is a good idea in general, but eliminating foods with natural sugar won’t stop cancer cells from dividing. According to Mayo clinic, sugar doesn’t make cancer grow faster. All cells, including cancer cells, depend on blood sugar (glucose) for energy. But giving more sugar to cancer cells doesn’t speed their growth. Likewise, depriving cancer cells of sugar doesn’t slow their growth. The link between sugar and cancer is different – according to Canadian Cancer Society, eating lots of sugary foods are more likely to cause you to gain weight. Research shows that being overweight or obese increases your risk of cancer. This is because obesity may cause changes in hormone levels or insulin that might increase the risk of developing breast, colon or uterine cancer. Therefore limiting the amount of sugar in your diet is important. Diets high in sugar and refined carbohydrates can lead to overweight and obesity, which indirectly increases cancer risk over time. On the other hand, new research suggest a different approach, and you can read more about it here.

Sugar can be found not only in obvious foods such as cookies, cakes, sodas, soft drinks and other sweets. Sugar can be found even in pasta sauce, salad dressing and canned vegetables. So when reading food labels, look for sugar listed as the first ingredient and be aware of hidden sugar names: fructose, lactose, sucrose, maltose, glucose, dextrose. Natural sugars such as molasses, honey and maple syrup contain beneficial antioxidants but those, too, should be consumed in moderation.   1. Fried food, French fries, potato chips and snack food

French fries, potato chips and other snacks may contain high levels of acrylamide, another carcinogenic substance that forms when foods are heated at high temperatures, such as during baking or frying. Acrylamide may be found in any food heated to a temperature above 250° F, but potato chips and French fries have been found to contain the highest levels among foods tested. Cooking methods such as frying, baking or roasting are more likely to produce acrylamide, while boiling, steaming, and microwaving appear less likely to do so. Longer cooking times and cooking at higher temperatures can increase the amount of acrylamide in foods further.

It must be mentioned that prolonged exposure to acrylamide has caused a range of tumors in animal tests (rats and mice), whereas most of the human studies published so far have failed to find any links between acrylamide and various types of cancers. However many believe it has a potential to be a human carcinogen because of those animal studies. If you’re still worried, the FDA and other public health groups say the best way is to follow the general advice on healthy eating, including limiting the consumption of fried and fatty foods.

Another components found in these type of foods that may increase the risk for cancer are trans fats or trans fatty acids. These are formed when manufacturers turn liquid oils into solid fats via a process called hydrogenation. And indeed, trans fats can be found in many foods including vegetable shortening, margarine, crackers, cereals, candies, baked goods, cookies, granola bars, chips, snack foods, salad dressings, fried foods, fats and many other processed foods. Trans fats cannot only increase your risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes, but the high intake of trans-fatty acids may have a direct association with prostate cancer in men, which ranks number one among the most common malignant cancers in American men. Chronic inflammation plays an important role to the development of prostate cancer and the association of trans-fats and chronic inflammation may explain the link between prostate cancer and trans-fatty acid ingestion. However, further studies and clinical trials are needed to establish this fact.

  1. Excess alcohol

There is a strong scientific consensus of the link between alcohol drinking and several types of cancer. The more alcohol a person drinks regularly over time—the higher his or her risk of developing an alcohol-associated cancer. Annona muricata L (Annonaceae), commonly known as soursop has a long, rich history in herbal medicine with a lengthy recorded indigenous use. It had also been found to be a promising new anti-tumor agent in numerous in vitro studies. The present investigation concerns chemopreventive effects in a two-stage model of skin papillomagenesis. Chemopreventive effects of an ethanolic extract of A. muricata leaves (AMLE) was evaluated in 6-7 week old ICR mice given a single topical application of 7,12-dimethylbenza(α)anthracene (DMBA 100 μg/100 μl acetone) and promotion by repeated application of croton oil (1% in acetone/ twice a week) for 10 weeks. Morphological tumor incidence, burden and volume were measured, with histological evaluation of skin tissue. Topical application of AMLE at 30, 100 and 300 mg/kg significantly reduced DMBA/croton oil induced mice skin papillomagenesis in (i) peri-initiation protocol (AMLE from 7 days prior to 7 days after DMBA), (ii) promotion protocol (AMLE 30 minutes after croton oil), or (iii) both peri-initiation and promotion protocol (AMLE 7 days prior to 7 day after DMBA and AMLE 30 minutes after croton oil throughout the experimental period), in a dose dependent manner (p<0.05) as compared to carcinogen-treated control. Furthermore, the average latent period was significantly increased in the AMLE-treated group. Interestingly, At 100 and 300 mg/ kg, AMLE completely inhibited the tumor development in all stages. Histopathological study revealed that tumor growth from the AMLE-treated groups showed only slight hyperplasia and absence of keratin pearls and rete ridges. The results, thus suggest that the A.muricata leaves extract was able to suppress tumor initiation as well as tumor promotion even at lower dosage.

Annonaceous acetogenins, phytochemicals isolated from the leaves, bark, and twigs of graviola, are thought to be the active ingredients of graviola. The ethanolic extract of Annona muricata shows in vitro antiviral activity against the Herpes simplex virus (1), and antimicrobial activity against Leishmania (3). Graviola extracts were shown to be lethal to the fresh-water mollusk Biomphalaria glabrata, which acts as a host for the parasitic worm, Schistosoma mansoni (2).

Alkaloids from graviola are detrimental to the survival of dopaminergic nerve cells in vitro. This may result in neuronal dysfunction and degeneration. Graviola-induced cell death was inhibited by glucose supplementation suggesting that cell death may have been caused by energy depletion (13). Graviola has also been shown to stimulate serotonin receptors (16). An ethanolic extract produced cell-stimulating behaviors either by increased mitochondrial turnover indicating stimulation in protein production or by preparation to leave the G1 phase, perhaps due to promitotic stimulus present within the extract which acts like a growth factor (20).

Graviola extracts were effective against the growth of adriamycin-resistant human mammary adenocarcinoma (MCF-7/Adr) by blocking access of cancer cells to ATP and by inhibiting the actions of plasma membrane glycoprotein (9). They also inhibited expression of HIF-1α, NF-κB, glucose transporters, and glycolytic enzymes resulting in decreased glucose uptake and ATP production in pancreatic cancer cells (10), and downregulated EGFR expression in breast cancer cells (11). Phenolic compounds in graviola also demonstrate free-radical scavenging potential against human breast carcinoma cells (21). Extracts of acetogenin muricins J, K, and L have antiproliferative effects against human prostate cancer cells, with the effect of muricin K being strongest (19).

In animal models, the antidiabetic effects of graviola are due to its antioxidant, hypolipidemic and protective effects in pancreatic β-cells, which improves glucose metabolism (7). In rodent models of hepatic cancer, although constituents of graviola led to reduced tumor growth, the acetogenin bullatacin caused liver and kidney toxicity via increasing calcium concentration, ROS production, and Bax expression and Bax/Bcl-2 ratio with repeated treatment (17). Fighting cancer with science and nature

In the U.S. (and across the West, more generally), we are understandably suspicious of medical hoaxes and scams, given the damage they can cause. Our media and pundits try to weed out medical assertions that are unsupported by science. The Internet, in particular, abounds with dubious products whose untested, often wildly oversold effects can easily persuade the unthinking and the credulous to part with their cash.

Yet as someone who follows and comments on developments in especially psychiatry, I frequently am struck by the faith we place in products that come with FDA approval, but a litany of unpleasant, sometimes risky side effects. When, for example, millions of men across America are willing to "double their risk of hearing loss" and jeopardize their eyesight for an erection, as recent studies warn about those routinely taking Viagra, you know that potency is something we take very seriously. Enough to tune out such warnings and opt unthinkingly for a blue pill, rather than a wealth of natural aphrodisiacs whose effect is basically identical—minus, of course, the nasty health risks. When our knowledge of natural products is also limited, even impoverished, by cultural biases that skew toward pharmaceuticals, our information-base shrinks accordingly. We ignore the well-known medicinal properties of vast amounts of natural products and end up placing enormous faith in pills whose very advertisements are forced to devote significant amounts of time and space to a laundry list of side effects. (The U.S. shares with New Zealand the dubious distinction of being the only Western countries to allow direct-to-consumer advertising of psychotropic pharmaceuticals.)

Because I also spend large amounts of time in South America, in particular Peru, from where I'm blogging this summer, cultural differences in medicine and public health can be especially striking. From here, over the last few weeks, I've been able to follow with intense interest the arguments both for and against naturally existing cancer-fighting agents, such as the leaves of the guanabana tree (hereafter known as "graviola"). From all that I've been able to investigate, from PubMed to the National Cancer Institute at the National Institutes of Health, my sense is that the leaves of this remarkably promising fruit should be getting more rather than less attention from the scientific community. As the studies below indicate, there is already strong evidence that acetogenins in the plant’s leaves target tumors in what scientists call “apoptosis,” or programmed cell death. Unlike in chemotherapy, however, that targeting, according to Zeng et al (1996b), is “relatively nontoxic to noncancerous cells.” In Peru, graviola is routinely part of a cancer-fighting arsenal, along with chemotherapy. In the States the latter prevails, eclipsing most other options.

First, some key background. About three years ago, word spread rapidly on the web about the cancer-fighting properties of "graviola," the leaves of the guanabana tree (Annona muricata), also known as "soursop," "cherimoya," "custard apple," and "Brazilian paw paw." The tree grows in Peru, Colombia, and Brazil, as well as countries in sub-Saharan Africa and South-East Asia with similarly temperate climates. In all of these countries, the fruit is eaten widely; it is often put in shakes and fruit salads, because it is so delicious. Additionally, the leaves and fruit are frequently used to treat viruses, infections, and depression. There is also, apparently, limited production of the fruit in southern Florida.

As millions of people suffer from all kinds of cancers, for which we have treatments such as radiation and chemotherapy (generally, with terrible side effects) but no cure, interest in and demand for graviola, in particular, skyrocketed around 2008 when reports of its efficacy started to rise. At the same time, some small businesses and a few hucksters, generally selling graviola with a host of other products (essiac tea, burdock root, sheep sorrel, blue-green algae, and so on), overstated their medicinal effects, whose accuracy had also been exaggerated in all the hubbub and excitement. Very quickly, a treatment known to kill some cancer cells and tumors (see below) morphed inaccurately into assurance about cancer's cure.

As rapidly as excitement had skyrocketed, skeptics rushed to denounce the "cancer cure" as a fraud and scam afflicting the needy, the desperate, and the gullible. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) swooped in to fine and close various businesses that had unwisely reported an ability to cure cancer. And in September 2008, Medical News Today publicized the FTC's actions, quoting its director of the Bureau of Consumer Protection, Lydia Parkes, as saying: "There is no credible scientific evidence that any of the products marketed by these companies can prevent, cure, or treat cancer of any kind" (my emphases).

The only problem with Parkes's blanket dismissal of all these elements is that, in the case of graviola at least, her claim wasn't in fact true.

In 1976, as Richard D. McCarthy, MD, reports on the encyclopedic cancer website U.S. Cancer Centers: Cancer Center Information and Research, "The NCI or the National Cancer Institute did some research on the guanabana cancer cure [sic] and came up with some interesting results. The study . . . showed that the leaves and stems of the plant were incredibly efficient at destroying certain cancerous cells in the body."

"Inexplicably," another site notes, "the results [of the NCI research] were published in an internal report and never released to the public. Since 1976, guanabana has proven to be an immensely potent cancer killer in 20 independent laboratory tests, but as of now, no double-blind clinical trials. [However], a study published in the Journal of Natural Products, following a recent study conducted at Catholic University of South Korea, stated that one chemical in guanabana was found to selectively kill colon cancer cells at '10,000 times the potency of (the commonly used chemotherapy drug) Adriamycin. '... The most significant part of the Catholic University of South Korea report is that guanabana was shown to selectively target the cancer cells, leaving healthy cells untouched."

Adds the same site, "A study at Purdue University, Indiana, recently found that leaves from the guanabana tree killed cancer cells among six human cell lines and were especially effective against prostate, pancreatic and lung cancers." The article, "Paw Paw and Cancer: Annonaceous Acetogenins from Discovery to Commercial Products," appearing in Journal of Natural Products 71.7 in 2008, was authored by Dr. Jerry L. McLaughlin of Purdue's Department of Medicinal Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology. The journal is published by the American Chemical Society and American Society of Pharmacognosy.

In response to the predictably enormous rise in public interest in graviola, Cancer Research UK also released a statement about the alleged cancer "cure" that included these sentences:

"In laboratory studies, graviola extracts can kill some types of liver and breast cancer cells that are resistant to particular chemotherapy drugs. But there haven't been any large-scale studies in humans. So we don't know yet whether it can work as a cancer treatment or not. Overall, there is no evidence to show that graviola works as a cure for cancer."

On the basis of the laboratory studies quoted here, with Cancer Research UK acknowledging that "graviola extracts can kill some types of liver and breast cancer cells," you might think that such preliminary but hopeful results would at least warrant further investigation. As the site states, "we don't know yet," implying a desire for further research, but also essentially acknowledging ignorance because of the rather astonishing absence of "large-scale studies in humans."

What's startling about the reaction in the United States, by contrast, was that the FTC's action overrode the initial findings of the National Cancer Institute. Even more puzzling, the NCI, after establishing those findings, decided against publicizing them and, for reasons unclear to me, against pursuing them further.

Here in Peru, by contrast, the leaves of the guanabana tree—in short, the very parts of it that both the NCI and CR determined do in fact have cancer-fighting properties—are widely considered part of a parallel set of treatments against cancer, along with chemotherapy and the removal of tumors through operations. In the case of one woman I interviewed, the former mayor of a small town (Supe) three hours north of Lima, graviola was noted by her doctor both for helping to kill cancer cells and for greatly boosting the immune system, itself a common victim of chemo, which destroys more than just cancer cells. In both cases, science supports his recommendation.

After an operation to remove a cancerous tumor in one of her ovaries, the woman (whose information I am relaying with her permission) was given a combined treatment of chemotherapy and a dietary supplement of graviola, taken with meals three times a day. (It's taken either in capsule form or as a tea with boiling water; in either case, that should always be in consultation with a doctor or oncologist). One year later, after she had battled intense side effects from chemo—including hairloss, skin damage, and nausea—she wasn't just in remission. Her cancer had completely disappeared. It remains gone to this day, two years later.

Although it is impossible in this case to distinguish clearly where the effects of chemo ended and those of graviola began, a carefully administered large-scale human trial could control for that variable. My point, then, is not to state or even imply that graviola is a "cure" for cancer. Following the science, I am instead urging that the States and other countries fund and advance such research, owing precisely to the initial findings of the National Cancer Institute and, more recently, of Purdue's Cancer Center.

In Peru, to point up the differences and give readers more information, a major chain, Bionaturista, with stores across the capital and surrounding country, grinds the guanabana leaves into powder under laboratory conditions, with all equipment carefully sterilized, and exports it to a client-base around the world. The chain is one of Peru's largest exporters—not bad for a country whose enviable economic boom is owing partly to its vast natural reserves of minerals and natural gas.

Nor, I should add, is graviola alone among natural products in having anticancer properties. In 2006, to cite Wikipedia, "a research team from the Ben Gurion University in Israel found that lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) also caused apoptosis (programmed cell death) in cancer cells." A key ingredient in especially Thai and Vietnamese cuisine, lemongrass—which is widely and inexpensively available across South-East Asia, South America, and in certain Western stores and supermarkets—is also routinely used as a delicious, healthful tea. According to the published studies below, its potency in killing cancer cells is dwarfed by that of graviola.

In urging that a lot more funding and research go into investigating why graviola kills certain kinds of malignant cancer cells, apparently I risk the ire of the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection. But rather than give a blanket dismissal of graviola and guanabana, perhaps the FTC should heed the findings of both the NCI and Cancer Research UK and look into this further. The health of millions of cancer sufferers and survivors around the world quite clearly depends on it.

Extracts of paw paw (Asimina triloba, Annonaceae) are among the most potent of the 3500 species of higher plants screened for bioactive compounds in our laboratories at Purdue University. The paw paw is a small tree native to eastern North America; its edible fruits (sometimes referred to as “Indiana Bananas”) have nurtured mankind for centuries. Activity-directed fractionation of the paw paw extracts, using the brine shrimp lethality bioassay, led to the isolation and molecular characterization of over 50 unique annonaceous acetogenins. Fractionation of extracts from related species resulted in the identification of over 150 additional acetogenins. The annonaceous acetogenins are derivatives of long-chain (C32 or C34) fatty acids. They are potent inhibitors of mitochondrial (complex I) as well as cytoplasmic (anaerobic) production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and the related nucleotides. The powerful cytotoxicity, in vivo antitumor, pesticidal, antimalarial, anthelmintic, piscicidal, antiviral, and antimicrobial effects indicated a myriad of potentially useful applications. Commercial development of these compounds uses natural mixtures of active components, incorporated into pesticidal, topical, and dietary supplement products. Successful applications and commercial products include a shampoo, highly effective in treating infestations of head lice, fleas, and ticks; a series of pesticidal sprays, which protects host plants against a diversity of pests; and an ointment for treatment of oral herpes (HSV-1) and other skin afflictions. The extract (in capsule form) enhances a mixture of natural anthelmintics. In addition, an encapsulated extract has been effectively used by certain cancer patients as a botanical supplement product.

What is graviola?

Graviola, also called Brazilian pawpaw, soursop, and guanaba, in addition to numerous other names, refers to a particular tree or its fruit. The fruit is green and heart shaped, and about six to eight inches (15.24-20.32 cm) in diameter. The tree is found in South America and on numerous tropical islands and grows best in rainforest climates.

The pulp of the fruit is popular in juices, sherbets, and smoothies, and exhibits notes of tangy and sweet. It can also be peeled and eaten, though some find the taste alone too sour. As a fruit, graviola may not prove exceptional, but it certainly has an extended history of use in ancient and now modern herbal remedies.

In early times, the leaves of this tree were used for tea to reduce swelling of the mucus membranes (catarrh) or to treat liver disease. The black seeds were often crushed and used as a vermifuge. All parts of the tree might be ground and used as a sedative or as an anti-convulsant. The fruit was used to reduce joint pain, to treat heart conditions, as a sedative, to induce labor, or to reduce coughing or flu symptoms.

In modern times, graviola has proven interesting to medical researchers because it contains chemicals called annonaceous acetogenins. These chemicals have been shown to have cytotoxic properties; in other words, they tend to attack cancer cells. Also these compounds may be a helpful insecticide, and several prominent universities like Purdue have patented their studies and work with graviola components, since they may later prove so useful.

Though the Food and Drug Administration may ultimately patent graviola or approve it as a prescribed medication for cancer treatment, studies are still early, and reveal some possible alarming side effects. Many websites on the subject, especially those selling the product as a nutritional supplement, say it has no side effects, as compared to cancer drugs. Certainly it may not cause hair loss, but known side effects exist and should be weighed carefully.

First, graviola can be an emetic. A large dose may make some people throw up, which makes it not that much different than standard chemotherapy. Second, it has a known depressant effect on the cardiovascular system and should be avoided by people with heart conditions or people taking medications for blood pressure or cardiac problems. Third, it can stimulate uterine contractions and should never be taken by pregnant women.

Another side effect is potential interaction with antidepressants. Graviola may also have antimicrobial properties, which kill off beneficial bacterial on the skin, in the vagina and in the gut. Long-term use can lead to yeast and fungal infections. The chemicals present in the fruit have also been found present in people with atypical Parkinson’s disease, though no cause and effect relationship has been firmly established.

While graviola retailers may claim the fruit and plant parts are completely safe in therapeutic dosing, the Food and Drug Administration have not yet evaluated these statements, since this product is viewed as a nutritional supplement. While the plant components have all been used in native medicines, it remains questionable whether it is actually beneficial. At the very least, it should always be used under the supervision of a physician.

Two related herbs, pawpaw and graviola, have proven effective against cancer cells in vitro (lab tests not involving mammals) while not adversely affecting non-cancer cells. In other words, they are potential non-toxic cancer cures. Even Sloane-Ketterer established that graviola has cancer cell resisting properties and doesn't damage healthy cells. However, private research proves that pawpaw is even more potent than graviola for curing cancer.

Why Aren't These Herbs Known to the General Public?

It costs too much for continued animal and human trials. However, the last section of this article features a limited trial. The way the approval system works has been rigged. Only large pharmaceutical companies can afford the trials they need to get FDA approval and exclusive patent rights that will bring huge profits while the patent is in effect. Big Pharma can't patent purely natural extracts from plants. So it's not worthy of their funding.

Nevertheless, over the last 20 years of the 20th century, a lot of research had been conducted at Purdue University by Professor of Pharmacology Jerry McLaughlin, PhD on paw paw, what it can do, and what makes it tick. He was fortunate to receive enough institutional and private funding for his work, and several alternative health practitioners as well as adventurous MDs and individuals picked up the ball, using pawpaw extract products for cancer and other health issues, even Lyme Disease.

All About Pawpaw

Before completely retiring in 2004 as a private researcher, Professor McLaughlin's published papers from Purdue featured only one of the eight species of paw paw, the Asimina triloba species. This species had the highest concentration of substances known as acetogenins than any species of paw paw or graviola.

Acetogenins inhibit a molecule known as adenosine tryphosphate, or ATP. The process that uses this molecule takes place in a cell's mitochondria, those strands in the interior of each cell. Cancer cells are high ATP users, thus inhibiting ATP will create a situation of the cancer cells dying off or apoptosis (programmed cell death).

Chemo kills cancer cells faster than pawpaw causes apoptosis. But of course, chemo kills healthy cells too, creating more suffering and even killing the cancer patient. Acetogenins do not harm non-cancerous cells. So pawpaw and graviola are non-toxic cures. Although graviola has been tagged as "Brazilian paw paw", its products are considered inferior to paw paw for two reasons:

(1)Paw paw products that use McLaughlin's formula contain more acetogenins than graviola. And McLaughlin's technique involves harvesting the twigs at the right time to create standardized dosages in those paw paw products.

(2)Even more importantly, the acetogenin chemical structures in paw paw are much stronger. Those structures are double rings compared to single rings that are prevalent in graviola.

Is There Any Third Party Human Trial of Record?

The state of Nevada allows a physician or health practitioner to perform informal clinical trials with unapproved remedies on terminal cancer patients who have already tried the Medical Mafia's routine of cut, burn, or poison.

In Reno, Nevada, James W. Forsythe, MD, associated with McLaughlin in 2002 and 2003 to test paw paw on cancer patients that fit those Nevada state law guidelines. Considering the condition of stage IV cancer patients who have been treated by mainstream medicine, the fact that 13 of the first 20 tried beat their cancer with pawpaw is impressive.

Contrary to this conventional view, the new study "provide[s] evidence that increased glycolytic activation itself can be an oncogenic event..." That is to say, the activation of sugar-based metabolism in a cell – driven by both the presence of increased quantities of glucose and the increase glucose receptors on the cell membrane surface (i.e. "overexpression of a glucose transporter") – drives cancer initiation.

Moreover, the study found that "Conversely, forced reduction of glucose uptake by breast cancer cells led to phenotypic reversion." In other words, interfering with sugar availability and uptake to the cell causes the cancer cell to REVERSE towards its pre-cancer structure-function (phenotype). What Are The Implications of This Research to the Diet?

What this new research indicates is that sugar – of which Americans consume an astounding 160 lbs annually (imagine: 31 five-pound bags for each of us!) – is one of the primary causes of metabolic cell changes in the body consistent with the initiation and promotion of cancer. And, the research indicates that removing it from the diet, and depriving the cells of it, could REVERSE cancer.

Hidden Sugar, Crouching Cancer

It has been estimated by the USDA that the average American consumes 200 lbs of grain products annually. Why is this relevant to the question of sugar in the diet? Because refined carbohydrate products – e.g. crackers, bread, pasta, cereal – are actually 'hidden' forms of sugar. In fact, puffed rice causes your blood to become sweeter (and presumably feeds more cancer cells sugar) than white sugar, as it is higher on the glycemic index. If It's So Bad For Us, Why Do We Eat So Much?

One of the primary reasons why we eat sugar and carbohydrate rich diets is because they are addictive. Within minutes of consuming sugar/carbs our body goes through a neuroendocrine roller coaster. Your brain can not survive very long without glucose, the fundamental energy unit of the cell, and will 'freak out' if deprived of a steady stream of this 'nutrient' within only 2-3 minutes. This seemingly endless vicious cycle is responsible for the insatiable cravings a high carb/sugar diet generates – not to mention the fructose-based hedonic effects generated in the brain that modulate both opioid and dopamine receptors in the nervous system (not unlike alcohol), and the pharmacologically active peptides in many gluten-containing grains, which also drive addictive behaviors and an almost psychotic fixation on getting carbs at each meal.

No wonder we have an epidemic of cancer in a world where the Westernized diet prevails. Certainly, we do not mean to indicate that a sugar/carb-rich diet is the only cause of cancer. There are many other factors that contribute to cancer initiation and promotion, such as:

Chemical exposure
Radiation exposure
Chronic stress that suppresses the immune system
Vaccines containing hidden retroviruses and cancer causing viruses
Natural infection with bacteria and viruses that are cancer causing
Lack of sleep
Insufficient nutrients (lack of methyl donors such as B12, folate, and B6 will prevent the body from 'turning off' (methylating) cancer-promoting genes

Even though cancer is a complex, multi-factorial phenomena, with variables we can not always control, one thing we can do is control what goes into our mouth. Sugar, for instance, does not belong there if we truly want to prevent and/or treat cancer. And don't forget, carbohydrates that don't taste sweet on the front end – bread, crackers, cereal – certainly convert to sugar in the body within minutes post-consumption.

In a nutshell, if you are concerned about cancer, have cancer, or would like to prevent recurrence, removing sugar and excess carbohydrates is a must. Not only is it common sense, but it is now validated by experimental research.
