Effects of using soursop to cure liver problems

Traditional medicines have been used for ages in the treatment of different liver diseases, and numerous herbal preparations are available in the market. One such example is soursop to cure liver problems. Rich in soluble fiber, antioxidants like Vitamin C and beneficial anti-cancer phytochemicals, soursop is believed to help your liver detoxify and support immune function.

The liver is responsible for breaking down most of the medications and chemicals entering the body — leaving it highly at risk to acute or chronic liver problems caused by chemicals. One of the most common causes of liver disease is drugs and toxins. Over-consumption or overexposure to such chemicals can lead to predictable consequence on the liver.

Another common factor of the development of liver problem is cancer. While primary liver cancer is quite uncommon, many forms of cancer usually metastasize in the liver. Many alkaline diet supporters claim that by maintaining the pH of the body slightly alkaline and consuming soursop to cure liver problems, it can help the body detoxify and block rapid cell degeneration. It is a well-known fact that the body requires an 80/20 alkaline/acid balance, 80% alkaline while 20% acid.

But why? Researches have shown that in lab tests, tumors thrive and multiply in a more acidic environment. If the level of acid is lowered, tumors develop more slowly. If such behavior occurs in tests, it makes sense that tumors and other disease-causing agents in the body would also be affected (in a hostile way) by a general alkaline environment.

Also known as guanabana, this tropical fruit is a natural immune booster, which has been traditionally used to improve liver problems, treat cold and flu and kill parasites. Since the 1940s, most studies has been focused on Annonaceous acetogenins, a natural compound produced in the leaves, bark, fruit seeds and twigs of graviola. Numerous studies have also showed than these natural chemicals have anti-cancer abilities, which mean they fight different cancer cells — and as such are great booster to the immune function.

Another beneficial attributes of guanabana to cure liver problems is its rich dietary fiber content. Soluble fiber is necessary in the proper functioning of the liver because it helps block and eliminate toxins and cholesterols that build up in this organ. A low fiber diet can result to accumulation of fat and toxins in the liver-causing health problems such as fatty liver disease.

In a study done by Taiwanese researchers, new acetogenins extracted from the leaves and seeds of soursop were used in the lab tests against liver cancer or hematoma cell lines. Theses three new alkaloids from the seeds were named muricin I, muricin H, and cis-annomontacin, while the two compounds from the leaves are annocatalin and cis-corossolone. These new acetogenins exhibited potent activity against the cancer cells.
